Safety Switch Tripping Adelaide

What Is A Safety Switch And Why Does A Safety Switch Trip In Adelaide?

A safety switch is a device located on your switchboard which quickly disables the flow of electricity by switching off the supply if a fault is detected. Since 1991, a law was introduced in South Australia to make them mandatory to reduce the risk of electricity-related fires and electrical shock. Such safety switches should be installed by qualified electricians such as our experts at Aquila Electrical on all new homes and buildings where electrical circuits are altered or added.

When safety switches first began being installed in Adelaide, electricians placed multiple circuits or even the whole house on the same safety switch. This resulted in a single safety switch tripping causing loss to all of the circuits in the Adelaide property. At Aquila Electrical, we use multiple small RCD Safety Switches on every single circuit, to ensure that if your kitchen or bathroom electrical circuit trips, the remainder of the house can keep on functioning as normal.

If you’re unsure whether your home has safety switches installed or if the wiring in your home is safe, contact our licenced electricians at Aquila Electrical and we’ll be more than happy to assist!

What Is The Process Of Fault Finding Due To A Safety Switch Tripping In Adelaide?

To begin, it is important that you find your safety switch that keeps tripping in Adelaide – which is found in the switchboard. Check to see if the safety switch or any of the circuit breakers are in the off position. If this is the case, the power has tripped, and it is best to attempt to identify the cause. If the switches are still ‘on’ or up, check the SA Power Networks webpage to see if there are any outages.

Following finding your switches turned ‘off’, attempt to flick them back on. If any of the switches or even the circuit breakers trip yet again, disconnect the last appliance you used. Reset the switch and or circuit breaker again, and if everything continues to function as normal, you have found the likely cause. Discontinue the use of the appliance until it has been checked by Aquila Electrical’s licenced electricians.

If despite this, your safety switch or circuit breaker continues to trip – unplug all appliances, including your fridge, hot water unit (gas) and dishwasher. Reset the switch again, if it stays on start to plug everything back in one by one. Until you locate the cause of the fault. Please avoid touching the appliances throughout the process.

After unplugging all appliances in the house the safety switch or circuit breaker still won’t reset you will need a qualified and experienced Electrician to find the fault. Contact Aquila Electrical to locate the fault and get your safety switch turned back on again.
